March: National Women's Month
Welcome to the month of March! That was my first thought when the 1st day of March began.
Women's month began when former President Corazon C. Aquino signed Proclamation No. 227 s. 1988 (Providing for the observance of the Month of March as ‘Women’s Role in History' Month) on March 17, 1988 to reinforce Proclamations No. 224 s. 1988 (Declaring the First Week of March of Every Year as Women’s Week and March 8, 1988, and Every Year Thereafter as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day). In our country, the Women’s Month Celebration has since served as a way to highlight women’s achievements and discuss the ongoing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues and concerns, challenges, and commitments. The celebration focuses on activities that are aligned with national and international instruments and treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, the Philippine Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025), the Framework Plan for Women, and the Sustainable Development Goals. Through this, women's rights are explained and people get the chance to be able to express things related to women empowerment, the current issues regarding abuse against women and children, the fact that there are still women who are belittled or isolated simply for being a woman, etc.
By being reminded of Women's rights and gender equality thanks to this month of March, we won't forget how important it is for everyone to be respected, heard, treated fairly, and such. At least, through this, there would be a slow yet steady improvement when it comes to how people treat each other since we get to inform each other ways to improve treating others, especially women. May this blog of mine help you understand and realize the importance of Women's month.
